Future Phi Alpha Cup Venues Announced

Steve Burr will try and re-capture his 2007 magic at his favorite Phi Alpha Cup venue in 2009.

pebble’s campaign for 2010 event falls short

After months of anticipation and unrelenting lobbying by some of golf’s most prestigious venues, the Phi Alpha Cup Executive Committee released the Tournament venues for 2009 and 2010. Selected for next year’s event was St. James Plantation, the scene of the last two Phi Alpha Cups, which included the 2008 event, called by some as the most exciting golf event in history.

Inside sources indicated that the committee selected The Clubs at St. James in large part to appease the public call for a rematch on the same soil. More of a surprise was the selection of Teeth of the Dog in the Dominican Republic for the 2010 event. Speculation indicates that the Phi Alpha Committee is following the lead of the NFL and Major League Baseball which have hosted events in Japan, London and Mexico City in order to expand fan bases. This is something that has been hinted at by Executive Committee members, but golf experts were somewhat surprised that the move occurred so soon.

Of particular note was the exclusion of Pebble Beach as a site in the next two years, especially given the public and private lobbying effort put forth by Pebble’s Events Committee. Phi Alpha insiders cited a concern for enough spectator room as a reason that Pebble Beach was not selected. Pebble Beach has hosted 4 U.S. Opens, a PGA Championship, numerous U.S. Amateurs and a PGA event every year since 1949.

The 2009 and 2010 Phi Alpha Cup venues announced as follows:

2009 – The Clubs at St. James Plantation, Southport, North Carolina
2010 – Teeth of the Dog, Playa de Pluma, Dominican Republic
