Winless in his first two Phi Alpha Cups, “Scuba” Steve “Aquaman” Burr came out during the first match of the 2007 tournament and delivered what some are calling “the shot heard ’round the world.”

With a record of 0-6, Burr teamed up with Andy Sands for Friday’s 1-4 Cumulative Matches at The Reserve at St. James. Facing Team 98’s David Johnson and Winston Black, Sands and Burr raced out to a commanding 5-hole lead only to have Johnson and Black run off three straight holes to cut Team 97’s lead to 2-up with 3 to play.

It was then that Burr pulled out his Ping 5-iron and landed it 3 1/2 feet from the hole on the 185 yard Par 3 16th. Sands followed suit with a laser 5-iron of his own, and the short birdie putts sealed the win for Team 97 and gave Burr his first Phi Alpha victory.

“I knew this day would come,” Burr said after the match. “I was underwater for much of 2005, underprepared in 2006, but 2007 is the year of the Burrito.”

“It was just special to be a part of history,” said Winston Black, echoing the sentiments of his playing partner, Johnson. “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”

The victory along with Andrew Parker and Chandler Willett’s win over Stirling Bomar and Jeff Eaton gave Team 1997 a 2-0 lead going into Saturday’s Best Ball matches.
